Top 12 favorite 2012 moments

HAPPY NEW YEAR'S EVE!!!

This year has been pretty amazing! I love looking back and reminding myself of all the great memories I've made. It's amazing what you can do within a year.

1. The hubs and I started off the year celebrating our 4 year dating anniversary.

2. I got our my first brand new car!

3. We went tubing for the first time at Big White. Then went skiing. First time for me in over 10 years! The mountains are a lot bigger in the West... That's all I'm sayin.

4. I celebrated my birthday in April. I don't exactly fly anywhere during the year so I look forward to events like birthdays. It's a time when friends come together and the drinks start flowing..

5. June was particularly the best month for me... Three things happened.
The first being my amazing camping trip with Bron that looked like this the entire weekend. Only Bron can make camping in the rain super fun and exciting!

6. When I came home from camping, I was unsually hot. Almost a week later I took my first pregnancy test. Want to scare your husband almost to death? Call him while he's away for work crying your eyes out telling him there's a line... he won't have a clue what you're talking about.
I took a few to be sure.

7. A couple of days after the cry fest, we drove 6 hours to Post Falls, Idaho! We brought Bron along for the weekend since it was her birthday. My husband entered a long drive competition which meant water/theme park time for us. She introduced me to Funnel Cake and I got to bring home some Trix. Happy dance. We're hoping to go back in 2013 as long as they host the competition again.

8. In August, my hubby and I celebrated our 1 year marriage anniversary!

9. Marce Lips was born in September. I've been blogging for 3 months, off and on, and I love it. There are some pretty amazing people out there.
10. I volunteered with the Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation for their First Annual Kelowna Red Dress Event in November. We raised $22,000 that night and I met a new friend... a mama-to-be who actually gave birth yesterday! Congrats M!

11. Christmas 2012. What a great Christmas. We have so much to be thankful for.

12. Getting my iPad. Nuff said.

I'm sure looking forward to tonight! Great friends, food, and games.
2013 is going to bring amazing things!
Happy New Years! Be safe, have fun, and smile lots!

Sunday Social - Last of 2012

1. Favorite New Years Eve you’ve had before
I would have to say 2011. We were surrounded by friends, ate lots of yummy food - including 10lbs of crab legs,  played games, and drank lots. My friends will never forget the "I'm allergic to champagne" comment either. Let me explain:

a. I drank champagne and started to lose my voice. They laughed.
b. I had a lot of alcohol in my system by that point.
Good times.
Lori, Me, Bron
Love these girls!

2. Are you doing anything for NYE this year and if so what?
We are going to Lori's house this year. It will be pretty tame on my part since I'm pregnant. Should be interesting. We're going to play Cranium and my new game: The Game of Things! Love it!

3. Name a book we should all read come January?
50 Shades of Grey. So. Awesome.

4. What are your new years resolutions?

I love clean slates but I usually forget about my resolutions after the first week.
2013 is going to be a life changing year.
I'm going to focus on the same things I've already been working on while adding new things so I'm going to print this and put it on my wall.

New
  • Budget - Starting January 1st, budget is key since my pay is slashed in half due to mat leave.
  • Labour - Don't pass out from pain. Hey, that's a huge goal for me.
  • Motherhood - Work on being the best mom I can be.
  • Patience - Learn patience.
  • Focus - Focus on the baby, my marriage, and myself. So important.
  • Food/Cooking - Learn how to cook and try new foods... like vegetables.
  • Travel - Spend more time visiting family/friends. Luckily the majority of people are within an 8 hour drive.
  • Friends - Work on friendships. Things are changing and friendships will change.
Old
  • Get healthier - Emotionally, mentally, and physically. Continue to work on my anxiety.
  • Communicate - Better communication with people; be less defensive and more outgoing.
  • Organize - Organize and de-clutter my life.
  • Creativity - Explore my creativity. Find new hobbies; blog/writing/painting etc.
  • Happiness - Work on authentic happinesss.
  • Lower expectations - I have a really bad habbit of setting unrealistic expectations.
  • Give and take - It's surprising how unbalanced this can be.
  • Appreciate - Show more appreciation to those around me.
  • Focus - Focus on the little things that matter.

Glymm Bag - December

The final Glymm Bag of 2012!

And I loved it!
I mean look at this beautiful gold bag!

Let's see what's inside...

 1. LashEm False Lashes - $5.00 Full Size
Of course I got excited when I saw the lashes!
I have very long lashes that I love but these add that extra bit of volume for special occasions.

2. Glamorous Cosmetics Lipstick - $9.50 Full Size
I'm not a fan of lipstick. I've said it before, you need lips to wear it.
It's not too bad though and it smells like baby powder to me. Pregnancy sense of smell I guess.
Kudos for the full size tube.

3. SunCoat Nail Polish - $9.99 Full Size
Glymm really seems to be pushing the nail polish lately which is something I can't complain about.
I love nail polish. This one is a bit dark for me but I do like it.
I just wish I could take better pictures of it!

4. LashEm Eyelash & Brow Enhancing Serum - Sample size 4.2ml
$70 Full Size
Completely useless to me. I don't like these products; whether they work or not.
I'll never use it and I would never pay $70 for something like this.

5. COUPONS
- I love the $10 gift card from Glymm.

- The $20 gift card from Panty by Post seemed like a fun/unique idea at first.
The problem? It's subscription based.
There is the option of buying 1 at $25 which is a rip off to me (the gift card makes it $5)
I can go to La Senza or Victoria Secret and buy beautiful panties for less than $25 and I would have the convinience of picking them out myself and not waiting for them to be mailed.

The bag, lashes, nail polish, and $10 coupon make this bag a 4.5/5 for me!
I'm just happy there was no perfume in it.

If you want to sign up to Glymm, go HERE
There are 4 options:

Monthly subscription (cancel at anytime - which is what I have)
6 month subscription
1 year subscription
Gift subscription - 3-6-9-12 months

Glymm.com is a world leading beauty and cosmetics website dedicated to making your life more beautiful.  For $12/month, you can order a Glymm Box containing a carefully curated selection of 4-5 deluxe beauty samples delivered directly to your door.  Order your Glymm Box today!

Christmas Time

I hope everyone had a great Christmas!
Yep. I'm a little behind.
What can I say? Life has been busy.

Some updates...

Baby - Almost 31 weeks
Baby H has been going through some growth spurts lately.
He likes to kick my ribs and nestle under there.
It's very odd when I feel like I'm going to squish him when I sit down!

I've had some cramps off and on for a couple of days but I'm assuming it's growth spurts.
I've had a couple other new symptoms but that's for That Just Happened Thursday!
I'm afraid to step on the scale so I'm going to wait until my Jan 3rd appointment.
It's not my fault the baby wanted chocolate and turkey over the holidays.

Food
Speaking of turkey. My brother made the best dinners I've had in years.
Ham dinner on Christmas Eve and Turkey dinner on Christmas Day.
So. Delicious.
Best scalloped potatoes ever. Yum.

Family & Christmas
This Christmas was one of my favorites so far.
It's nice having family around for Christmas.
This was the first Christmas my mother, brother, and I have shared since I was a kid.

Kids
My niece was completely happy with her gifts. Ok.. happy doesn't describe it.
We got her a Justin Bieber pillow case and blanket.
Two words: Bieber Fever.
Need I say more?

My nephew loved his Beyblade arena.

My littlest nephew loved his Jake and some Pirate thingy bathtub boat.

I love watching kids open their presents!

My Christmas
I also love receiving presents.
This year's best gift goes to...
My loving and amazing hubby for THIS!!

I'm in love!
So much fun.
As you can tell from the picture, we did some cooking.
We made homemade pizza and lasagna from one of my favorite apps - All Recipes!
Mmm.

What a great Christmas.
Now onto the New Year!

Monday Happiness

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE!

I love sharing video's that make me smile.
Today I'm bringing you 3 video's from YouTube that I absolutely love.
They are based on cuteness, music/holiday, and art.

I've mentioned my kitties before so there should be no surprise why I love the first video.
The amount of trust he has with them is amazing!

The second video is one for the holidays and from 1998!

Let's finish it off with a "WTF" art video I found last week since I love anything artsy.
Absolutely... ridiculously... awesome.

Which one's your favorite?

Paleo: Olive, garlic & lemon chicken

Some facts about me and cooking:

  • I don't exactly like to cook. My tastebuds hate me. That makes it very difficult when I can't sample what I'm cooking.
  • My idea of cooking is spaghetti, 4 cheese sauce, and pickles on top because it takes 9 minutes from start to finish.
  • I can cook if I really want to. Meaning, I can cook when I'm trying to impress my hubby.
  • If it were up to me I would hire a personal chef... tomorrow. Can I throw in a house cleaner too? One day Marci. One day.

Either way, I'm trying to "expand my horizons" as they say. I normally dislike chicken so this was a big step for me.

This is a chicken recipe I tried that turned pretty good despite the fact that it didn't turn out like the picture. This is probably a good time to mention that I may skip over instructions or miss things. I always tend to add more lemon. Note: Do not add more lemon.

Why do recipe pictures always lie by the way?

How it's suppose to look

How it turned out
Uhhh???

*Remember Paleo is eating clean. No refined sugar. No dairy. No grains.
The ingredients can be substituted for non paleo foods if you wish.*
Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter (or ghee), tallow, coconut oil or poultry fat; we used coconut oil
  • 1/2 lb black olives (kalamata), cut in half; we excluded this
  • 8 chicken thighs, with bones and skin;
  • 3 cups onions, sliced thin;
  • 30 gloves garlic, minced and smashed almost to a paste;
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice;
  • 2 extra lemons, thickly sliced (remove seeds with the tip of a knife);
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken stock;
  • A bunch of picked thyme leaves;
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste;

Technique

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 F.
  2. Melt the first 1/4 cup fat in a large and hot pan and brown the chicken pieces on all sides. It will take about 6 minutes total. Set the chicken aside. May have forgotten the whole browning part here.
  3. Cook the onions until soft, about 3 minutes, and make sure to scrape all the delicious chicken bits off the pan while doing so.
  4. Add the garlic and cook for about a minute, until fragrant. You can season with salt and pepper at this point.
  5. Add the chicken stock, thyme and lemon juice and return the chicken thighs to the pan, skin side up.
  6. Bring to a simmer and put the pan, covered, in the hot oven for about 20 minutes. Just noticed it said oven, oops.
  7. Remove the lid, add the halved olives as well as the lemon slices and bake for another 15 to 20 minutes uncovered.
  8. Serve the chicken with the olive, garlic and lemon sauce as well as with some of the lemon slices.

ENJOY!!!

What not to say to a pregnant lady

I may not always have the best manners but what ever happened to common sense? It seems like more and more people are forgetting it lately. It's either that or people are just plain rude and dumb.

Baby Update
I'm 29 weeks
This is Baby H as of Tuesday
He's healthy
I've gained 18lbs so far
The scar is from my belly ring that I had to take out. Boo.

Today's example of what NOT to say to a pregnant lady.

Customer: When are you due?
Me: March 4th
Customer: Oh. So you still have a bit to go. Is this your first or second?
Me: First
Customer: Wow. You're really big for the first time.
Me: Uh.. It's probably because I'm all belly.
Customer: Are you sure it's not twins?
Me: 100% We double checked since both our mother's are twins.
Customer: Oh. I guess you're going to have a big baby then.
Me: Big or early. Hopefully early.

Who says that to a complete stranger?? Am I crazy or is that not rude?
At least it was less creepy than the pest control guy hinting for 5 minutes that he wanted to rub my belly. I can only think of so many ways to say NO politely...  Bare in mind, this is also the guy who put a bug trap in my face when I asked him several times not to.

Moving on......... Let's talk about yummy deep fried food!

Again, excuse the HORRIBLE Blackberry pictures.
Phone Gods, please send me an iPhone! Thanks. Hint. Hint.

Monday was my Mama's birthday!
The moving company finally showed up after 3 weeks so she is officially settled in to her new place!
The hubby and I decided to treat her to dinner at Eastside Mario's! Mmmm.
I hadn't been there in a while so when we ordered the appy plate and I saw those deep fried macaroni triangles, I instantly melted. By far the best creation ever! I need to learn how to make these. Or maybe I don't. That could be bad.

I think I just got my first pregnancy craving.
Great. Now I want ice cream too.

Mama's meal. There's pasta somewhere under all that parm cheese.
She said it was the best meal she's had in a long time!

It was a fun night out!

Are you offended?

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Are you offended?
No? Good!
Yes? Well I'm offended that you're offended.

I don't understand how 2 words have become such a disgrace.

I grew up in this Country saying Merry Christmas as a child.
It was my norm. It made people smile. It made people feel good.
It made ME feel good.
We rarely say hello to one another now a days let alone Merry Christmas.
There's something wrong with that.

I mean some places have bans now for crying out loud.
No Christmas parties
No saying Merry Christmas
No decorating offices
No Christmas trees
Really???

I think it's a joke personally.

If someone wished me Happy Hanukkah I wouldn't be offended.
It's a hard thing to grasp that people are offended when I wish them joy over the holiday season.
It's a hard thing to grasp that people have nothing better to do than file a complaint over a Merry Christmas sign on a city bus because they "feel unwelcomed". See CBC News.

I don't understand why I have to change my traditions because some people don't believe in it.
If you don't believe in it, fine, but don't ruin it for everyone else.
I don't call for bans on the Chinese New Years, Hanukkah, Easter, etc.
I respect other people's religion, opinions, and beliefs.
I expect the same in return.

So what if I wish you a Merry Christmas.
It's been a saying/tradition that's been around since 1565.
I think there are more important issues to focus on.

So today, despite your religion, race, or culture...
I'm going to wish you
Merry Christmas!
Happy Holidays!
Seasons Greetings!
Happy Hanukkah!
and whatever else there is.. . why?
Because in the end, I just want you to have a good day.
Wow. I'm so horrible.

No Silence

No silence for me.

The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary was absolutely devastating.

To think someone can be sick enough to intentionally harm innocent people, especially children, is disgusting. It's a sin we live in a world filled with so much hate, anger, greed, and, power. It's a sin we live in a world where a 6.5 year old girl had the idea to play dead while a shooter shot every person in her classroom. I mean, who thinks of that at that age?

I just don't understand and I don't think anyone ever will.

I've noticed quite a few of my favorite bloggers have gone silent today in respect of those who lost their lives. I'm not one of them. I believe in the power of talking, listening, and comforting.

- Families need to hear encouraging words
- Families need to hear support
- Families need people to listen to them
- The discussion about gun control; whether you agree or not, should be discussed
- Most importantly, in my opinion, mental illness NEEDS to be taken more seriously

All of the information hasn't been released so there's no need to speculate why this guy did what he did. And the media needs to take a step back when dealing with crisis situations. If they would have waited until they gathered FACTS, they wouldn't have plastered the wrong man's name and picture all over TV.

Take the time today to talk to your children or family members. Tell them how much you love them. Give them a hug. Be grateful for everything you have. Remember to smile for those who survived.

Blog Hop - Weekend Update

You will all have to suffer with my horrible Blackberry pictures until one of two things happens:

1. I get a new memory card for my camera because the two I have are full
2. I get an iPhone

Not much happened this weekend.

Friday

1. We had a power outage at work on Friday due to a truck hitting a transformer.
I decided to make a snowman. I love me some snow.

2. Remember how I said power outage. This darkness/flashlight picture would be the bathroom. Yep.
They kept us there for almost 5 hours with no power/heat and a flashlight for the bathroom.
Then we got sent home for the day. Yay for half days!

Saturday

The power was back Saturday and I had to work. Hubby got stuck with a flat tire for 4 hours (who would have thought that tire places would be busy on a Saturday on the first snow day..oh wait) Didn't help that he was sick and I couldn't leave work. Poor man.
Should have told him to take a picture though.

Snuggle fest weekend
1. Cosmo being my favorite snuggle bug.
2. Cosmo with his new toy. A box.
3. Comet being all cute.
4. Cosmo apparently needed more attention.

Sunday

Sunday's are usually my favorite day. Grocery shopping. It's very therapeutic to me.
Now I just have to figure out a meal plan for the next couple of weeks since we have so much food!
Anyways have ideas??

That's all. How was your weekend??

Sunday Social

Every week I always check out Katie's Sunday Social post. I just love them!

So here are this weeks questions.

1. What is the wallpaper on your cell?

This would be the bed of our hotel room the night my husband proposed!
August 6th 2010.

2. What do you keep beside your bed?

Usually my lamp and my phone.

3. What is your least favorite chore?

Cleaning bathrooms! I hate cleaning bathrooms!

4. If you could eliminate one thing from your daily routine, what would it be?

That would be work.. oh wait, that's happening in a month anyways! Helloooo mat leave!

5. What do you do to vent anger?

Yell or cry. Nothing wrong with shedding a few tears.

6. What is your favorite holiday of the year, and why?

Ok.. I have 2.
My birthday because I get presents and ice cream cake. Yep. I'll admit it. I'm selfish.
Christmas because of the snow (when we actually have some), christmas lights/decor, spirit, and of course presents. I love giving and receiving hehe.

Our tree this year. I can't wait to get a real one! It's been way too long.

For the non-domesticated wife...

I married my husband on August 6th 2011 and I'm so lucky to have met him. We will be celebrating our 5 year dating anniversary next month! Exciting! Over the years he's learnt that I'm not exactly the domesticated type. So, if you're the non-domesticated type of lady like myself and you've just taken the plunge, here's my advice for you.

1. Cooking
Your man, whether you are a master chef or not, will appreciate a nice home cooked meal every once in a while. Nothing says "I love you" like a huge chunk of steak, baked potatoes, and veggies.
You should have seen the first time I cooked asparagus. Did I mess it up? Oh you betcha. They were so overcooked and you could have tied them in knots but he still ate them anyways!

2. Cleaning
Most people generally know how to clean. But there's a difference between clean and CLEAN. Know this difference... Especially when he has a lot going on. When my husband walks through the door and sees a clean counter, no dishes, and dinner ready he wonders if we got robbed... He may have just said that.

3. Laundry
The laundry may pile up in our laundry basket occasionally. I don't mind doing laundry but I don't do the whole separating thing, except for towels... Everything usually gets thrown in the washer then the dryer (and sometimes forgotten). The important part here is folding and putting away. If you iron/steam his clothes without him asking, you may be in luck for a massage or foot rub later on.

What would you add to the list?

Yummy chocolate chip cookies!

Paleo Chocolate Chip Cookies

When my husband and I followed a paleo lifestyle earlier this year, we came across this recipe for chocolate chip cookies and made them every week. It's a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth in a healthier way. Since I'm a picky eater, I was really surprised that I loved them so much.
We made some slight modifications (pink) until we came up with something we really enjoyed.

Serves: 24

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract (Pure vanilla can be expensive; we used the cheaper stuff when we didn't have any)
  • 1 1/2 cup Semisweet Chocolate Chips (You can use dark chocolate chips)
  • 1/2 cup melted Coconut Oil
  • 1/2 cup real Maple Syrup
  • 2 whole Eggs (free range)
  • 3 cup Blanched Almond Flour
  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Process

Note, these instructions are written assuming the standard serving size, since you have modified the number of servings, these steps may need to be modified for best results
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. In a medium-sized mixing bowl combine dry ingredients.
  3. In a small mixing bowl beat eggs, maple syrup, and vanilla extract with a hand mixer.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry and beat with hand mixer until combined.
  5. Melt coconut oil, pour into batter, and continue to blend until combined.
  6. Stir in chocolate chips.
  7. On a parchment-lined baking sheet, drop balls of cookie dough, about a tablespoon in size.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes.
  9. Let cool and serve with coconut milk.

50 Things About Me

I was reading 50 things about me by Lesley over at By the Porchlight last week and decided to write my own list. I guess it's a way for people to get to know me better but if nobody reads it, that's fine too.

1. I'm 27 years old; born in New Brunswick. See that little red arrow? I now live on the complete opposite side of the country.

2. I hate lipstick. You have to have lips in order to wear lipstick.
3. I also hate wearing nail polish on my fingers. It makes my fingers cold.
4. Speaking of nails; I'm a beauty school drop out (not my fault - $$).
5. I'm a big dreamer. They're usually unrealistic but in my defence, what's life without a dream?
6. I always wear my hair up so I just chopped it all off. The back is now 2 inches long. Thank you Victoria Beckham... Of course it never looks that nice when I style it.

7. I am fluent in English and French but I'm rough around the edges since it's been so long.
8. I used to play softball as a kid and I loved it.
9. I was a tom boy growing up.
10. I really want to learn how to play piano.
11. I love that big sunglasses are popular because they have never fit my face.
12. I wear kids glasses. Go Converse.
13. I love anything baggy like sweat pants, hoodies, and my hubby's PJ's I wear to bed. Oh so comfy.
14. I want to write a book one day.
15. I want to start my own business and start a non-profit.
16. I'm the pickiest eater you will ever meet.
17. The picky eating only relates to healthy food. I love anything with sugar in it.
18. Nobody will buy me jewelry because I always lose/ruin it.. hence why my wedding/engagement rings never leave my finger...
19.  I love mittens and socks.. oh and I wear socks to bed. Not these ones in particular though.

20. I really hate sharing.
21. I really hate it when people eat or drink off me when I'm not done. It's disgusting. Even if I'm sharing a plate with my husband, I draw a line in the middle and when it gets too close, I'm done.
22. I love anything related to art; painting, drawing, crafts etc.
23. I have a Business Management Diploma. It's pretty useless unless you have prior experience.
24. I would rather be in school than work.
25. I love vodka. Hate beer, wine, and well.. mostly everything else. I'm picky with my liquor too.
26. I love going to yard sales.
27. I'm usually cold ALL the time (except now - thank you pregnancy!) I was in heaven when we went to Florida and it was 100+ degrees (45 celcius) every day.
28. We went to DisneyWorld/Universal Studios/Discovery Cove/Seaworld for our Honeymoon. I got to swim with a dolphin and snorkel with sting rays. Top 3 best days of my life.

29. I'm terrified of flying.
30. I'm a 90's girl. I love anything and everything 90's.
31. I'm a BSB fan, what can I say. My husband surprised me with VIP passes and proposed to me after a Backstreet Boys concert in 2010. He's a total keeper.

Notice how I'm strategically positioned by Brian...

32. I'm addicted to my phone and computer.
33. I told myself I would marry my husband the night I met him.
34. I love my blue eyes and long eyelashes. People think they're fake.
35. I've had 2 surgeries for endometriosis.
36. I LOVE board/card games.

Deep in thought
See. I take games seriously.
